I want Cadillac to excel and redeem their brand image so badly. I know that the ATS is a great car. That being said, I can't explain this:

Kinja'd!!!

I know the ATS comes with standard leather (~$1000) but that only makes the price match. Am I somehow cross-shopping different segments?

ATS is 3-series sized..

Isn't the ATS a 3/4 rival not a 1/2?

Maybe externally, but look at this (admittedly from BMW's site, easily fact-checked):

I'm beginning to wonder about that. I spent a short time in an ATS, but inside it felt like my old E30 (pleasantly) but I will say it looks bigger than it feels inside, more like the size of my 2009 WRX than a current 3-series. It's subjective, but I think it would be weird not to cross-shop the ATS and the M235i.

If anything, that just assured how pointless the 2-series is.

The ATS is a 3-series competitor. Cadillac has said this, that's what auto mags compare.

Some folks will always equate a car's size with its class/market/expense, but if that's really the case everyone should just buy a loaded Platinum Limited Taurus tank which has tons more space, as many toys, and is cheaper.

But for me, before I get anywhere near scrutinizing an extra two inches of legroom or which has more Blueteefs, I have to get past paying 45k for a 2.0 4-banger, instead of a perfectly balanced I6 + twinscroll turbo. I love the ATS, but could only get the V trim since I'm not paying premium-car price to drag around a midsize with a 4 cylinder.

So don't. You can grab the ATS with the 2.0 L Turbo and a manual for $38,000-$39,000.

What really isn't worth it is the ATS with the V6.

Yeah, I guess you're right. They've obviously priced the ATS against the 3, but honestly it's still not competetive. I should've pitched the 2-series against the Mustang instead.

Couldn't pay 40k for an inherently unbalanced, small-car engine in a heavyish midsize. I don't find any of the base models of the "premium" segment worth it because you're paying for an upscale badge with a down market engine. When you get to the mid model, BMW wins by offering 320hp in an engine nowhere near its limits, and at the top end Cadillac wins for that awesome TT V6.

Yes it is a 3-series competitor, but in the real world people do cross shop segments.

The M235i is so tempting at that price.

This^. Compare it to the 3. The 3 may be a little longer in overall length but the wheelbase should be closer to the ATS than the 2 series.
